Andrew Giel focuses his practice on resolving construction disputes on behalf of his clients through both arbitration and litigation, including actions on mechanics’ liens.  He also counsels clients on transactional and other miscellaneous matters.

Mr. Giel advocates for his clients through all stages of arbitration and litigation in both state and federal court, from drafting pleadings and serving and responding to discovery requests, to conducting depositions and managing expert discovery, to filing pre-trial motions and statements.  Mr. Giel regularly argues motions and attends court conferences as his clients’ sole representative, and also prevails on motions to dismiss, preliminary objections, and motions for summary judgment, leading to effective mediations and conciliations which efficiently resolve disputes in favor of his clients without trial.  When trial becomes necessary, Mr. Giel prevails on motions for judgment as a matter of law and has also assisted with a two-week federal trial resulting in an eight-figure jury verdict in favor of his client.  In all matters, Mr. Giel always strives to provide the highest level of client service, keeping clients informed and engaged from matter intake through final resolution.

Mr. Giel serves as an arbitrator in the Compulsory Arbitration System of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas – Civil Division.  Mr. Giel also maintains active involvement with the Allegheny County Bar Association by serving as an officer in the Construction Law Section, assisting with the presentation of Continuing Legal Education sessions with the Civil Litigation Section, and participating in the Bar Leadership Initiative, where he also helps to brighten the holiday season for children in shelters around the Pittsburgh area by serving on the Children’s Gift Drive committee.

Mr. Giel also maintains an active pro bono practice.  He assists with the preparation of estate planning documents for first responders, military veterans, and their families at Wills for Heroes events.  Mr. Giel also assists with the Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership’s Custody Conciliation Project, representing clients in resolving custody disputes by keeping a focus on the best interests of the children involved in each matter.  Additionally, Mr. Giel has successfully prosecuted a federal civil rights claim on behalf of an incarcerated person, helping DFL Legal earn the Allegheny County Bar Association’s 2021 Pro Bono Achievement Award upon nomination by U.S. Magistrate Judge Maureen P. Kelly.  Finally, Mr. Giel has also coordinated service projects for the other members of the firm and, while at Penn State Law, Mr. Giel earned a Certificate of Recognition in Public Interest for his membership in the Rural Economic Development Clinic, where he drafted contracts and agreements for local clients while advising them in various business matters.

Mr. Giel worked as a Summer Associate at DFL Legal before joining the firm full-time after graduating from Penn State Law.  While in law school, Mr. Giel worked as a Legal Intern for an engineering and architecture company, where he reviewed contracts, managed various corporate governance and registration matters, and vetted potential clients and corporate partners.  Finally, during his undergraduate studies, Mr. Giel completed internships related to construction and civil engineering, including as an Assistant Project Engineer during both the design and build phases of a new wing addition on a regional hospital and as a Junior Consultant at a site-civil development engineering firm.
